Axonometric

Axonometric is defined as "a technique for depicting space, often employed by architects, in which all lines remain parallel rather than receding to a common vanishing point" To show an example of axonometric I used a design by Theo van Doesburg. The painting is called "Meudon House Plan: Axonometric". The above picture is anometric because the lines of the house are parallel and seem like it may be a potential design for a home. The Meudon House also does not have a specific vanishing point.

Two Point

The textbook defines two point linear perspective as "a version of linear perspective in which there are two (or more) vanishing points in the composition." My example is found in this painting by Gustave Caillbotte. The painting is called "Gardeners" and was created in 1875. I chose this painting because there are two vanishing points. One of the vanishing points is located by first gardener. The second point of focus is located by the gardener that appears to be walking.

Outline

The textbook defines outline as "the edge of a shape or figure depicted by an actual line drawn or painted on the surface". I chose to represent outline by using a piece from artist Jaune Quick-To-See Smith. The painting is called "Indian Horse" and was created in 1985. I chose to use Jaune's work because his painting was a clear outline of a horse. The background is bright and loud, however the outline of the horse remains apparent and eye catching.

Implied Line

The defenition of implied line is "a line in artwork that is not physically there but is suggested by points in the artwork." To show an example of implied line I chose to do a painting by African artist Cheri Samba. I felt that this was a good example because the children that appear to be playing games all share the same midpoint which is located on the building. The line on the buidling gives the other images a three dementional effect, which ultimitley makes the picture breathtaking.

Contour Lines

Contour lines show the outline of the subject, and not the volume or mass of an object. I decided to use a drawing done by artist Henri Gaudier Brzeska. The piece is called "Horse and Cart with two riders" which was created in 1912. The picture is an outline of a heavy woman that appears to be wealthy, the woman is accompanied by a man that seems to be a servant and catering to her needs. I choose this picture because the people and horse do not have much detail the drawing appears to be an outline.

Expressive

Expressive Line is defined as “A kind of line that seems to spring directly from the artist's emotions or feelings--loose, gestural, and energetic--epitomized by curvilinear forms.” To show the use of expressive line I chose to do a piece by Vincent Van Gough. The painting is called Wheat Field with Cypresses and was created in 1889. According to the text book Van Gough’s paintings are known as one of the most personally expressive works of art. The emotion of Van Gough is clearly displayed in this work. Van Gough uses lines to show color and excitement, I noticed this primarily because the use of color in the sky.
